Man on overpass caused Thruway shutdown in Dunkirk

DUNKIRK – A man standing on a Thruway overpass forced the shutdown of a portion of the highway in Chautauqua County late Thursday.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office got the report of a “despondent subject” standing on the ledge of a bridge that passes over Route 60 at about 11 p.m.. The man had gotten outside of a safety fence, authorities said.

Emergency responders were able to persuade the man to walk back from the ledge and off the overpass. He was transported to Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving for a mental health evaluation.
