University at Buffalo researcher to be on network news program for segment on concussions

Dr. John Leddy, medical director of the University at Buffalo Concussion Management Clinic, will appear Thursday morning on “CBS This Morning” for a segment on a new way to treat concussions in athletes ages 12 to 18.

A consensus is growing that mild, controlled aerobic exercise may speed recovery in concussions. That’s a reversal of conventional medical wisdom, and more scientific study is needed to confirm the new thinking.

Leddy, also a physician with UBMD Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, is leading a study that may offer an answer as researchers embark on a clinical trial of exercise and stretching treatments for adolescents with concussions. CBS This Morning, which airs from 7 to 9 a.m., came to the UB campus a few weeks ago to tape the segment.

Specialists believe that prompt and active treatment can quicken recovery, and reduce or eliminate the potential long-term effects of concussions. The study is being conducted with the University of Manitoba.
