All-Star center Ryan O'Reilly leads the Sabres with 16 goals and 34 points during his first season in Buffalo.

Ryan O’Reilly wanted to become a go-to guy with the Sabres. He’s become their newest All-Star, so his plan has worked.

The NHL announced Wednesday that O’Reilly will represent Buffalo during All-Star Weekend later this month. The center leads the Sabres with 16 goals and 34 points in 40 games. He’s helped Buffalo rank ninth on the power play with a team-high 15 points during the man-advantages.

O’Reilly was one of 11 players selected from the Atlantic Division as the NHL has tweaked the All-Star format. The game, which will be played Jan. 31 in Nashville, will be three-on-three with six forwards, three defensemen and two goalies for each divisional team.

The Eastern Conference’s Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions will face off in one semifinal, with the Central and Pacific divisions from the Western Conference playing each other. The winners will meet for the championship. Games will be 20 minutes long and decided by a shootout if tied.

The annual skills competition will be held Jan. 30.

With every team being represented during All-Star Weekend, spots were at a premium. Rasmus Ristolainen, who is 12th among defensemen in scoring with seven goals and 26 points, and rookie Jack Eichel (13 goals, 26 points) also merited attention for the last-place Sabres.
