Aries Spears plays six shows at Helium

With several years touring as a stand-up comic and starring on sketch shows like Fox’s “MadTV” and Showtime’s “The Underground,” Aries Spears comes to Buffalo this week for six shows at Helium Comedy Club from Thursday to Sunday..

Spears started stand-up comedy at the young age of 14, and it wasn’t long before he booked appearances on “Def Comedy Jam” and “It’s Showtime at the Apollo” comedy series. Starting with 1992’s “Malcolm X,” Spears also appeared in several movies and television shows over the years, including a memorable role as Cuba Gooding Jr.’s brother in 1996’s “Jerry Maguire.”

After getting cast on “MadTV” in 1997, Spears became the second-longest-serving player in the show’s history. He mastered comedic impersonations of dozens of entertainers and athletes, including James Brown, Al Pacino and Jay-Z.

Spears will perform at Helium at 8 p.m. Thursday; 7:30 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets for the shows range from $20 to $33 (box office,
