10-year-old girl hospitalized after dog bite in Amherst

A dog bit a 10-year-old girl on the head and face in late December, requiring her to be hospitalized for several days, Amherst police reported Wednesday.

The incident happened Dec. 31 outside an apartment complex at 4105 Harlem Road, between Kings Highway and Saratoga Road. The girl was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital and released on Jan. 4.

The dog has been impounded under an order by Amherst Town Justice Geoffrey Klein. A hearing will be held Jan. 22 in Amherst Town Court to determine if the dog will be designated as a “dangerous dog” under the state Agriculture and Markets Law, police said.
