Black Willow Winery wins honors at wine competition

BURT – Black Willow Winery and Valhalla Meadery were recently honored with a number of medals from the Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition, Grand Harvest Awards, and the American Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition.

The winery, which also runs the meadery, is also celebrating its fifth anniversary at 5565 W. Lake Road and is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Cynthia West-Chamberlain and Michael Chamberlain.

The winery will hold an open house from noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 30 to celebrate its fifth anniversary, featuring live music and food.

Black Willow’s DePeche Meow recently won the prestigious Medal of American Excellence (gold) at the Jefferson Cup Finals, held in Kansas City, Mo., last month. In addition, five Medals of American Merit (silver) also were awarded to the winery’s Trilogy Red, Black Widow Berry, Bare Cat Blush, Trilogy White, and Chardonnay.

The American Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition, held last month in Tysons Corner, Va., also resulted in a hefty medal count for Black Willow. Its Classic Diamond was awarded the prestigious double gold.

Additionally, DePeche Meow received a gold medal at this competition, while silver medals were awarded the winery’s Cabernet Franc, Freyja’s Passion Mead, Bare Cat Blush, Black Willow Berry, Trilogy White, and Odin’s Nectar. Bronze medals were also granted to Valkyrie’s Lure Mead and Chardonnay.

Vineyard and Winery Management sponsored the recent 2015 Grand Harvest Awards, where wines were judged from a field of nearly 1,500 entries. Among the awards Black Willow Winery received were silver for its Bare Cat Blush and Trilogy White and bronze for its Cabernet Franc.

Black Willow Winery has earned several double gold and gold awards over the past five years and its Classic Diamond was featured in the movie “Still Alice.” Its gift shop supports local artisans in addition to featuring a full line of artisan oils and vinegars.
