Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo appointed Karen L. Nicolson, chief executive officer, Legal Services for the Elderly, Disabled or Disadvantaged of Western New York, to the New York State Advisory Committee for the Aging for a three-year term. Nicolson has been CEO at LSED for the past 15 years. LSED provides free civil legal services to seniors in the counties of Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Wyoming, Allegany, Orleans and Genesee, as well as to the Seneca Nation of Indians.


Physicians at Kenmore Mercy Hospital recently recognized Helen Rovillo, a unit clerk, and Brian Wetzel, Pharm.D., who both received the annual Medical Staff Associate of the Year Award for 2015. This award recognizes outstanding associates for their service to patients and staff. Rovillo joined Kenmore Mercy Hospital in 2007 as unit clerk on 2 West, where she has remained as a valuable member of their team. Wetzel came to Kenmore Mercy first as an intern in 2007 while attending the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy, where he earned a doctor of pharmacy degree.

Joe Basil Chevrolet was named No. 1 GM dealer in sales volume of all makes and models in November 2015 in Western New York by General Motors Northeast Region. The dealership came in second in the Northeast region, next to a Rochester dealership, and fourth overall in the nation among all Chevrolet dealers. Joe Basil Chevrolet outperformed all others in Western New York with 331 total units sold in November. Joe Basil Chevrolet also has received General Motor’s Dealer of the Year award in 2015 for the seventh consecutive year, and was ranked the No. 1 sales volume dealership of any make or model in Western New York in 2014.


Gerard Place in Buffalo received a $10,000 award as winner of the 2015 Howard J. Berman Prize, named for the former CEO of Lifetime Healthcare Cos., parent company of Univera Healthcare. The prize, presented to Gerard Place executive director David Zapfel, recognizes community-based, nonprofit organizations in Upstate New York for pursuing local initiatives to improve public access to health care. In addition to the cash award, Gerard Place received a sculpture portraying the spirit of humanity. Gerard Place provides transitional housing and supportive programs for homeless, single-parent families.
