High School Extra (Dec. 24): Zanghi notches double-double; Martinsen drops 39 for Will East

Zanghi notches double-double

Caroline Zanghi scored 24 points and pulled in 15 rebounds as St. Mary’s/Lancaster defeated Tapestry, 41-35, in a nonleague girls basketball matchup. Tapestry (6-2) had taken a 21-13 halftime lead but St. Mary’s had a strong second half including a 16-4 run in the third quarter to improve to 2-5 overall. Nia Caver had 23 points for Tapestry.

In other nonleague action, freshman Sara Pfeiffer scored 23 points to pace Olean to a 53-42 win over Pioneer. Junior Gabby Pfeiffer scored 14 as the Huskies improved to 4-0.

Martinsen drops 39

Erica Martinsen scored 39 points to lead Williamsville East to a 77-49 win over West Seneca East in ECIC II girls basketball. Martinsen, a sophomore guard, also had eight rebounds, six assists and six steals. Rachel Romanowski added 14 points for the Flames, who improved to 5-0.

Schmidt hits from long range

Olivia Schmidt drained seven three-pointers to score 21 of her game-high 23 points from beyond the arc as Holland earned a 54-19 win over Lackawanna in ECIC IV girls basketball. Schmidt also had six steals and five assists while Julia Grupp had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

St. Joe’s edges McQuaid

Naseer Jackson had 18 points as St. Joe’s picked up a 48-46 win over McQuaid (Section V) in nonleague boys basketball. Jack Capen scored 13 for St. Joe’s while Nicholas Motley had 11.

Lamar leads Timon

William Lamar scored 22 points with eight assists as Bishop Timon-St. Jude defeated Williamsville North, 97-70, in nonleague boys basketball. Joe Harrison sank five three-pointers and finished with 18 points for the Tigers (3-4) while Tyler Ringwood had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Newfane remains undefeated

Newfane improved to 7-0 overall with a 48-33 win over Albion in Niagara-Orleans league girls basketball. Emily Foltz led the Panthers with 14 points.
