LOCKPORT – David R. Wohleben, who was elected alderman from Lockport’s 4th Ward last month, was named Common Council president for 2016 by Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey Tuesday. In Lockport, the Council president also is the deputy mayor.
Wohleben, a Republican, is one of five new aldermen being sworn into office Jan. 1. The new Council will be split 3-3 between Democrats and the GOP.
“I’m humbled and honored,” said Wohleben, who retired from the Air Force in August 2014 after 33 years in uniform, which included flying combat missions in Iraq. He is a former president of the DeSales Catholic School Board of Trustees and at present is treasurer of the Historic Palace Theatre.
“He shares my vision of efficient government,” said McCaffrey, a Republican. “He had a financial and human resource background at the (Niagara Falls) Air Base. Because he is retired, he has the time to commit to this position.”
