• 10 Stollen from Wolter's
Like Italian panettone, German stollen is a dense, sweet holiday bread, flavored with walnuts, raisins and candied fruits, and rolled in powdered sugar. My local favorite is from Wolter's Bakery ($12.99), with a wonderful anise aroma, and chock full of goodies.
Janet Mitchell, my legal assistant and Teutonic food guide, brought some home for her mother. They both agreed it’s one of the finest stollen they have eaten, preferring the coating of granulated sugar to the usual messy powdered sugar varieties. This year, if you are considering the dire mistake of gifting a fruit cake, consider a stollen instead.
