LOCKPORT – Police Traffic Capt. Michael F. Niethe was chosen Monday by the Police Board to be the City of Lockport’s new police chief, according to informed sources.
Niethe and Detective Capt. Brian W. Wentland were the only officers eligible for the promotion. The Buffalo News learned that Wentland withdrew from consideration before the Police Board’s scheduled job interview session Monday.
The decision is to be submitted to the Common Council, which has called a special meeting for 5 p.m. Wednesday to vote on a benefit package for outgoing chief Lawrence M. Eggert, whose last day on the job is Dec. 30. Eggert is to receive the same benefits that are received by retired members of the Hickory Club Police Benevolent Association, the police union.
