12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Eighth Day

Here are my suggestions for a uniquely Buffalo 12 Days of Christmas, one delicious gift a day until Christmas Eve. Traditionally the 12 days of gift-giving follow Christmas, but this way you’ll have plenty of time to prepare.

12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Seventh Day (Wheat noodle soup from Kaydara)

12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Sixth Day (eggnog from Hoover's Dairy)

12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Fifth Day (panettone)

12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Fourth Day (Buffalo Proper's Tom and Jerry)

12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Third Day (Sichuan-style chicken from China Star in Amherst)

12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: Second Day (Schwabl's hot-ham sandwiches)

12 Days of Buffalo Christmas: First Day (veal chop from Hutch's)

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

•    Eight cuccidati from DiCamillo, Louie's, Panaro's and Muscoreil's

I’m Italian, so it’s hard to pick the best Christmas cookie, with pizzelles to biscotti, tarali to giuggiulena, or a pyramid of honey-drizzled struffoli to choose from.

Yet the cuccidati – Sicilian cookies stuffed with figs and nuts, drizzled with frosting – stands alone. My mother makes the best (secretly mixing in sangria), but there are some local contenders. My wife, Casey, adores cuccidati and her favorite are from DiCamillo Bakery ($4.99/container), whose large cuccidati are filled with an almost chocolaty mix of figs.

We also love the spicier, smaller cuccidati at Muscoreil’s Bakery ($22.99/lb.), Louie's Deli ($16.99/lb.) and Panaro's ($14.50/lb.).
