Gerald D. Oehlbert, a retired pharmaceutical representative from Depew, died Thursday in Greenfield Health & Rehabilitation Center, Lancaster, after a long battle with cancer. He was 72.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Oehlbert graduated from Riverside High School and attended the University of Buffalo. He served in the Army Reserves for six years.
Mr. Oehlbert began his professional career as a pharmaceutical representative for the Swiss company Ciba-Geigy. He spent 38 years with Ciba-Geigy and its successor corporation, Novartis Pharmaceuticals. He retired from Novartis in 2005.
Mr. Oehlbert was a licensed pilot for 42 years, flying both a Piper Cub and a Piper Cherokee. He volunteered for the Erie County Sheriff’s Aviation Division and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He also volunteered for the Millard Fillmore Suburban Pharmacy Department.
Mr. Oehlbert was active in several organizations, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association and Venice (Fla.) Aviation Society. He was past president and board member of the Hebrew Benevolent Loan Association.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, the former Judith Lengel; two sons, Scot and Sean; a sister, Babette Hirschorn; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in Mesnekoff Funeral Home, 8630 Transit Road, East Amherst.
