The goal for high school basketball teams in New York for the past 36 years has been to reach the state finals in Glens Falls.
That streak will stop at 37.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association on Friday voted to move the championships to Binghamton, starting in 2017. The finals still will be held in Glens Falls next March.
Binghamton will host the championships for three years, through 2019.
The vote was 14-8, and goes against the wishes of the boys basketball committee, which had voted to return to Glens Falls. Binghamton reportedly offered the use of its Veterans Memorial Arena rent-free. The use of the Glens Falls Civic Center is said to have had a $12,500 price tag.
Section VI reportedly supported the move to Binghamton.
Glens Falls was awarded the boys and girls state Federation championships from 2017 to 2019 last week. It had been in Albany for the past five years.
