Niagara Falls man pleads not guilty in statutory rape case

LOCKPORT – A Niagara Falls man pleaded not guilty in Niagara County Court Friday to having sex with an adolescent girl June 20 and 21 in Niagara Falls.

Richard Ackerman, 41, of 85th Street, was indicted on a charge of third-degree rape, also known as statutory rape. The girl he allegedly was with is younger than 17, which is the age of sexual consent under New York law.

In another sex case in County Court Friday, a Niagara Falls 16-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree sexual abuse for having sexual contact with a girl under age 11 on July 25. The defendant is eligible for youthful offender status but still could go to state prison for as long as four years. Judge Sara Sheldon will pass sentence Feb. 26.
