Jan. 4 hearing planned for Buffalo cop in home-alone case

A Buffalo police officer is facing two misdemeanor charges for allegedly leaving two of his children at home alone on a Sunday afternoon last February.

The situation unraveled when a fire broke out in the house at 166 Burgard Place and a neighbor had to help one of the children escape.

Larry Muhammad Jr., 29, was arrested Dec. 13 in connection with the incident last Feb. 1. He is charged with two counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child under age 17 and is scheduled to appear before Buffalo City Court Judge Susan M. Eagan on Jan. 4.

The children, ages 5 and 8 at the time, were not injured and the Red Cross assisted the family after the blaze.

Muhammad joined the Buffalo Police Department in September 2012 and reportedly remains on duty while an internal investigation is underway.

It remains unclear how long the children were alone and how the fire started, but the blaze caused $35,000 in damage to the two-story home and $15,000 in damages to the family’s belongings.
