Torn Space Theater plans experimental theater festival

Torn Space Theater, the Buffalo company known for its ambitious theater projects in disused spaces throughout the city, announced plans Thursday for an experimental theater festival in August, 2016.

The centerpiece of the festival, timed to coincide with Torn Space's own summerly site-specific theater piece, will be a short run of "My Voice Has an Echo In It," an immersive, six-hour performance by the New York City-based company Temporary Distortion. The show will run Aug. 18 to 20 in an unnamed venue.

The piece, according to a Torn Space release, "features a six-hour durational performance of live music, spoken text and video set within a freestanding, soundproof environment." Audiences will watch performers through two-way mirrors as an eclectic mix of music and ambient sound effects plays, creating what Torn Space called "an intimate concert atmosphere where everyone has a front-row seat."

Torn Space's own summer project, as yet untitled, will run concurrently in one of the grain elevators at Silo City and aboard the SS Columbia, a historic passenger boat now docked in a state of disrepair on the Buffalo River.
