Here’s my suggestions for a uniquely Buffalo Twelve Days of Christmas, one delicious gift a day until Christmas Eve. Traditionally the 12 days of gift-giving follow Christmas, but this way you’ll have plenty of time to prepare.
On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me...
• Five golden panettone from DiCamillo Bakery
While I wouldn't recommend this, but if I had to switch a gift of five golden rings for something edible, there would be no better choice than panettone.
Dating to Roman times, it is a rich egg cake usually mixed with nuts and candied fruit, traditionally eaten on the Epiphany (Jan. 6). My family eats this luxurious treat on Christmas morning, toasted with salty butter. It also makes a wonderful French toast.
My favorite is at DiCamillo Bakery ($22.99), imported from Piedmont, Italy. This soft version holds candied orange peels, raisins, almonds and is drizzled with rich hazelnut syrup.
For more imported Italian varieties, you can head to Premier Gourmet, or I would even suggest trying Wegmans for a nice alternative at half the price.
