SISTER JUSTINE LYONS, OSF - Born in Columbus, Ohio, on May 19, 1922, died on December 15, 2015, at the Sisters of St. Francis Health Center, Stella Niagara, NY. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Clara (Stephens) Lyons. Sister Justine (baptized Rosemary) attended Holy Rosary High School in Columbus, OH and the Seminary of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, at Stella Niagara, NY. Following graduation, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, Stella Niagara, NY, on September 6, 1940, and was professed on August 18, 1942. She attended Rosary Hill (Daemen) College, Amherst, NY, where she received a B.S. degree in English in 1957. Sister Justine later attended the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., where she received an M.A. degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology. She also received a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association. Sister Justine's principal work was education (teacher, tutor and speech therapist). She served at St. Benedict School, Eggertsville, NY; St. Joachim School, Bishop McMahon High School, and Sacred Heart Academy, in Buffalo, NY; Rosary Hill College (Daemen), Amherst, NY; Stella Niagara Education Park, Stella Niagara, NY; as well as Rosary High School, Sacred Heart High School, St. Matthias School, and St. Francis DeSales High School, in Columbus, OH; and St. Anthony School, Charleston, WV. Sister Justine was speech therapist at the Diocese of Columbus, OH Guidance Center, and Private Practice Speech Therapist in Columbus, OH. Sister Justine became a resident of the Stella Niagara Health Center in May 2012, while continuing to tutor at Stella Niagara Education Park. She was well known for her singing voice and her children's choirs. She also enjoyed oil painting for relaxation. Sister Justine is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Timothy P. Lyons, Mercedes Zenker, Kathleen Gormley, Helen Bonin and Julia Hammond. Sister Justine will be waked at Stella Niagara Convent on Friday, December 18 from 2:00-7:00 PM, where a prayer service will be held in her memory at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 AM in the Sisters' Chapel at Stella Niagara.
