Canisius’ women’s basketball team got a taste of top competition Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
Fifth-ranked Texas (9-0) pretty much toyed with the Golden Griffins on the way to a 92-62 victory, ending a six-game Canisius winning streak.
Twelve different Longhorns joined in the scoring with four in double figures led by 6-foot-7 Imani Boyette’s 15.
Houston native Tiahara Mills had 13 points for the Griffs while two natives of Iceland, Margret Halfdanardottir and Sara Hinriksdottir, had 11 and 10 respectively.
Texas led, 22-10, after the opening quarter and 47-30 at the half. Canisius played the home team even in the third before the ‘Horns turned it up a notch and outgunned the Griffs, 24-11 in the final quarter. Canisius will be off until a nonconference road game on Monday afternoon against Northeastern in Boston.
