Two men were captured after a police chase following a robbery of the KeyBank branch late Monday morning at Del-Ton Plaza in the Town of Tonawanda.
One man entered the bank at 4248 Delaware Ave. at about 11:40 a.m. wearing a respirator mask to cover his face and brandishing a handgun, demanded money and ran out of the bank, according to town Police Capt. Joseph F. Carosi.
An alert person outside the bank told police that the suspect got into a blue 2016 car that drove north on Delaware into the City of Tonawanda, where police officers who had been monitoring calls about the holdup gave chase.
Police tried to force the car to the curb, but it accelerated and drove toward River Road and into Buffalo, Carosi said.
With patrol cars in pursuit, the suspects’ car sped through the Riverside and Black Rock sections of Buffalo before crashing into a gas meter at Normal Avenue and Race Street.
The two men, who got out of the car and ran in opposite directions, were arrested by City of Tonawanda and Buffalo police officers.
The respirator mask, handgun and the bank money were recovered. One City of Tonawanda police officer suffered a slight ankle injury and a City of Tonawanda police car was damaged in the chase.
Carosi praised City of Tonawanda Police Lt. Robert I. Clontz and Officer Frank E. Washburn Jr. for their roles in the captures.
The names of the suspected robbers have not been released.
