LOCKPORT – The Erie Canalway Trail at the Lockport locks was closed Monday and will remain closed until at least Friday because of rehabilitation work on the wall of the canal just east of the Pine Street Bridge.
New York State Canal Corp. spokesman Shane Mahar said the work on the high wall separating the canal from the city began Nov. 9 and since then, trail users were detoured around it via the “island” in the canal that separates the current locks from the Flight of Five, the original locks. However, this week, the contractor, Nichols, Long & Moore Construction Co. of Lancaster, needed to bring in drilling and other heavy equipment that required the firm to cut the power to the lights on the island, making the detour potentially unsafe, Mahar said.
The detour to the island will be reopened no sooner than Friday. The $787,230 rehabilitation work is slated to be completed in the early spring, Mahar said.
