LOCKPORT – The Dale Association’s two Lockport locations have been equipped with heart defibrillators, thanks to a grant from Univera Healthcare.
The units have been installed at the human services agency’s locations on Ontario and Lock streets. The organization operates numerous programs for senior citizens. A defibrillator can be used to shock a person’s heart into beating again in a proper rhythm in case of cardiac arrest.
The semiautomatic defibrillators, manufactured by Philips, issue voice commands instructing the user on how to attach the sensor pads to the patient and determine whether there is cardiac electrical activity that would make a shock feasible and likely to succeed. Patients who have “flatlined” can be revived only through cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Univera and its parent company have paid for almost 160 defibrillators for public buildings and police agencies throughout Western New York.
