A 31-year-old East Aurora man was arrested late Thursday night and accused of robbing an ATM customer by gunpoint at a Citizens Bank branch at 4964 Transit Road in Cheektowaga, Cheektowaga Police reported.
Michael W. Johnson was charged with second-degree robbery, criminal use of a firearm, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Hamburg Police are investigating whether Johnson is responsible for a similar robbery in their town on Dec. 1.
Police were called to the bank by the 53-year-old woman who reported that the robber displayed a handgun, took her ATM card and forced her to divulge her PIN number. After the thief unsuccessfully tried to get money from the ATM, he fled, police said.
Johnson was arrested shortly after a clerk at a nearby store observed a man pull up to the ATM at the NOCO station at Transit Road and Como Park Boulevard, police said. The man ran into the store and then ran out, prompting the clerk to note the license plate number of the truck the man was driving, police said. Lancaster police located the man in the parking lot of a supermarket and a silver handgun in the grass along the sidewalk on Transit Road.
