University at Buffalo senior tight end Matt Weiser was named to the Academic All-America first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Weiser becomes the first UB player to earn first team honors since the Bulls joined the Football Bowl Subdivision level in 1999.
Weiser, a communication major, has a 3.49 grade point average. He's one of 26 Division I players across the country to earn first-team all-academic honors.
Weiser also made first-team All-Mid-American Conference for the Bulls after catching a tight end school-record 63 passes for 625 yards this season. Those totals ranked second in the nation among all tight ends. Weiser is a Womelsdorf, Pa., native.
"This means a lot," Weiser said. "Growing up, my parents really stressed the importance of school with sports. They were always stricter on me than the school was. To be able to get a degree from UB; to be able to play football here and now receive this, it's a blessing and an honor that all the hard work is paying off."
