University at Buffalo researchers Luis A. Colón and Mark T. Swihart have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The honor is bestowed on AAAS members by their peers for their efforts to advance science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. Colón is a prolific analytical chemistry researcher who holds eight U.S. patents and has contributed to more than 100 research publications and delivered more than 180 invited lectures on his research worldwide. Swihart, a distinguished professor in the department of chemical and biological engineering, is co-holder of five U.S. patents, co-author of more than 150 research publications, and has delivered approximately 50 invited lectures worldwide.
Senior Wishes, a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of low-income senior citizens by granting meaningful wishes, was presented the 2015 Program of Excellence Award by Network in Aging of WNY.
Modern Recycling Corp. in Western NY received the 2015 Recycling Leadership Award, Private Sector, from the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling, the professional recyclers’ association for New York State.
The 10th annual “Operation: Rock Out Hunger,” presented by 97 Rock and co-sponsored by WKBW-TV Channel 7, collected a record 4,000 turkeys during its seven-day promotion for the Food Bank of Western New York. The number of turkeys donated nearly doubled the previous record of 2,508 turkeys, set in 2012. In addition to turkeys, the Western New York community donated nearly 19,640 pounds of food and more than $20,000 in cash.
