The University at Buffalo and Hofstra, who between them have won 11 of 12 games, meet in an interesting early-season women’s basketball matchup Thursday night in Hempstead (Radio 1520, 7 p.m.).
UB (6-0) is off to its best start in 14 years. The only loss for Hofstra (5-1) was to No. 7 ranked Oregon State (73-50) in the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico.
The all-time series between the schools in women’s basketball goes back to the 1991-92 season when both were members of the East Coast Conference. UB leads 5-3, but Hofstra won the last three, most recently in 2009.
Junior Joanna Smith leads UB in scoring at 17 points per game. The Bulls average only 58.5 points per game, but limit opponents to 46.3 with a 32.7 field goal percentage. Smith is the only junior in the UB lineup. Three of the other four are sophomores and the fifth is 6-foot-4 freshman Mirte Scheper.
Junior guard Kelly Loftus leads Hofstra’s scoring at 12.8. Hofstra has some size off the bench in 6-4 junior Sandra Dongmo from Cameroon and 6-3 freshman Kayla Minott from Ottawa. The Pride has defeated Navy, Stony Brook, American, Fairfield and Coastal Carolina.
