BENNINGTON – Katherine E. “Katie” Diemer, who owned and operated a grocery store here for more than 50 years, died Nov. 23 in Sisters Hospital St. Joseph Campus, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. She was 91.
Born in Bennington, the former Katherine Ziewers attended elementary school in Bennington and was a graduate of Attica High School.
She became owner of Ziewers Grocery, which her family established in 1927, when her mother died in 1961 and continued operating it until just before her death. Regarded as a cornerstone of the community, she welcomed customers to sit on her antique Buffalo News bench and talk about their personal concerns.
A member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bennington, she enjoyed feeding birds and flower gardening.
Her husband of 54 years, Arthur “Archie,” was the first person to purchase Buffalo Bills season tickets when the team was established in 1960 and was honored in 1999 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He died in 2001.
Survivors include two daughters, Patty Fox and Julie Reiner; two sons, Terry and James; a brother, Alfred Ziewers; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Dec. 12 in Sacred Heart Church, 1230 Clinton St.
