Medicaid enrollees in Niagara County have another option.
WellCare Health Plans in November expanded into Niagara and four other counties in the state, bringing to 16 the number of counties the Tampa-based insurer serves in the state, including Erie County.
WellCare, which provides managed-care services for Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and other government-sponsored health care programs, is starting to offer Medicaid and Child Health Plus programs in Niagara County shortly after Independent Health announced it will withdraw from Medicaid in Niagara County by the end of the year. WellCare joins Fidelis Care New York and United Healthcare of New York in providing Medicaid coverage in Niagara County.
As of Sept. 30, WellCare served about 112,000 Medicaid members, 47,000 Medicare Advantage members, 51,000 Medicare prescription drug plan members and 7,500 managed long term care members in the state.
