Vasbinder third in Nike run
East Aurora’s Kenny Vasbinder, competing for the Aurora Runners, finished third in the boys championship race and Sophia Tasselmyer, also competing for Aurora, was 11th in the girls run of the Nike New York State Cross Country Regionals on Saturday at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
Vasbinder ran the 5,000 meters course in 15:54.5. Ben Petrella of the Liverpool Warriors won in 15:31.4. Tasselmyer was clocked in 18:34.9. Kaitlyn Neal of Manlius XC won in 17:37.8. Hope Pietro- carlo of Maple Grove, running for the Bemus Point Rams, finished 28th in 18:34.9.
Peter Rindfuss of Hamburg, running unattached, finished 10th in the boys race in 16:11.7. T.J. Murray of Aurora was 22nd in 16:32.6
Vasbinder’s two points in the scoring led the Aurora Runners to a third place finish in the team competition. Also scoring were Murray (15), Ian Russ (28), Matt McLaughlin (30) and Will Zink (34).
Tasselmyer’s 9 points led the Aurora Runners to fifth place in the team standings. Also scoring for Aurora were Molly McLaughlin (22), Fiona Danieu (25), Tori Klimowicz (27) and Erin Cocca (81).
Barber 24th in Bronx run
Owen Barber, a senior at Allegany-Limestone, finished 24th the Foot Locker Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Barber was timed in 16 minutes 13.9 seconds for the 5,000 meters course, less than a minute behind the winner Noah Affholder of Fort Drum, who won in 15:23.9
Two runners from St. Joe’s Monsignor Martin League championship team also ran. Anthony Belfatto covered the course in 16:24.1 for 36th place while Marcus Brown was 112th in 17.32.9. Tyler Deuschle a senior from Depew was 144th in 18:25.5.
A field of 168 runners ran in the regional one of the four to determine the field for the Foot Locker National Championships Dec. 12 in San Diego.
There were no Western New York entrants in the girls race won by Madeleine Davison of Wexford, Pa., in 17:39.1.
Pembroke wins at Alden
Tournament MVP Aralyse Johnson had 16 points and 13 rebounds in leading Pembroke of Section V over Alden, 44-39, in the championship game of the Alden Tournament. The matchup and result was a repeat of last year’s final. Cookie Altieri had 13 points for Alden.
