Oct. 4, 1928 – Nov. 19, 2015
Mary Philomena Nardozzi, 87, of Grand Island, the co-founder of Madison Floor Covering, died Thursday in Buffalo General Medical Center.
A Buffalo native, the former Mary Montemarano was a graduate of Lafayette High School, and the owner of Lady Ruth Beauty Salon in the early 1950s. She was proud to tell of the day in 1951 when Lucille Ball, who was appearing at Shea’s Buffalo, walked into her shop near the theater to get her hair done. Mrs. Nardozzi used a flat iron to tame Ball’s curls.
In 1953, Mrs. Nardozzi and her husband, Thomas S., founded Madison Floor Covering on Grant Street. The business has moved to the Town of Tonawanda and is operated by second and third generations of the family.
In addition to her husband of 64 years, Mrs. Nardozzi is survived by two daughters, Rachel D’Agostino and Catherine Wright; one brother, Dominic Montemarano; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island.
