Russell A. Reed of Orchard Park, a retired teacher, died Nov. 11 in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after suffering from congestive heart failure. He was 91.
He had a 34-year career teaching English and reading in Orchard Park High School and Orchard Park Middle School, retiring in 1989. He was a founding member of the teachers’ union.
Born in Elmira, he served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and earned a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Buffalo.
Mr. Reed took part in the 1968 Poor People’s March on Washington, D.C., and was active in opposition locally to the Vietnam War.
He won a Buffalo Evening News amateur photography award in the early 1960s.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Regina Bolla; two sons, Christopher A. and Jeffrey M.; a daughter, Michele A.; and a sister, Maxine Rutski.
There will be no services.
