Flutie: Parents' passing in the same day is proof 'you can die of a broken heart'

The Facebook post was both sad and profound.

"They say you can die of a broken heart," former Buffalo Bills quarterback Doug Flutie wrote. "And I believe it."

On Wednesday, both of his parents, Dick and Joan Flutie, died within an hour of each other of heart attacks. Dick was ill and in the hospital when he passed away. Joan died less than an hour later. They had been married for 56 years.

"I would like to honor my parents for all that they did throughout my and my brothers' and sister's lives," Flutie wrote on Facebook. "My parents were always there for their children, from the days my Dad coached us as kids and my Mom would work the concession stands, through to this morning."

Flutie spent 12 seasons in the NFL, including three with the Bills (1998-2000). The former Boston College and Canadian Football League star also played for the Chicago Bears, San Diego Chargers, and New England Patriots.

"The most important part of their 56 years of marriage was providing opportunities to their children," Flutie added on Facebook. "They were incredible parents and Grandparents and my family and I will miss them both. On behalf of me and the entire Flutie family, I would like to thank you all for your well wishes and prayers during this difficult time."
