Descendants of former slaves gather for University at Buffalo workshop

Descendants of former slaves William Grimes, Dred Scott and Jeffrey Brace will discuss “Reclaiming Our Ancestors: Descendants of 19th-Century African-American Writers Share their Journeys” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Central Branch auditorium of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, 1 Lafayette Square.

Descendants of Solomon Northup, Lewis G. Clarke, Moses Grandy and Venture Smith also will be introduced.

The panel discussion is free and open to the public. It is part of a three-day workshop in which descendants of former slaves will be gathering at the University at Buffalo to explore their ancestral roots through a series of discussions, reflections and writing exercises led by Kari Winter, UB professor of transnational studies.
