Transit Road reopened in both directions in Depew after gas leak

IRR Supply and surrounding businesses were evacuated Wednesday morning due to the natural gas leak that closed a portion of Transit Road in Depew.

A tractor-trailer hit a natural gas line in front of the business at 5635 Transit at about 7 a.m. First responders who arrived at the scene found a large pressurized volume of natural gas leaking from a supply line, according to Depew police.

Transit between Broadway and Walden Avenue was closed because of concerns about the leaking gas would move onto low-lying areas of Transit under viaducts just south of Walden, police said.

The situation was “declared safe” at 8:20 a.m., National Fuel spokeswoman Karen L. Merkel said, and the Depew Office of Emergency Management announced at 8:40 a.m. the road was reopened in both directions.

In addition to Depew firefighters, firefighters from Lancaster, Bowmansville, Hy-View and Bellevue assisted with the incident.
