NIAGARA FALLS – The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Wednesday that it is reviewing a plan for a brownfield cleanup near the site of a Niagara Falls hotel.
The plan from Merani Hospitality calls for covering over the low-level naturally occurring radiation and PCBs at 430 Buffalo Ave., across the street from the former Fallside Hotel, which Merani intends to replace with a new eight-story, 184-room hotel. The cover will be two feet of soil, gravel, asphalt or all three. If the DEC decides to endorse that plan, it will conduct a 45-day public comment period.
The now-vacant lot at 430 Buffalo Ave. was the site of the original Nabisco Shredded Wheat plant, according to the DEC. The lot at 401 Buffalo Ave., on which the old hotel sits, and another vacant lot at 402 Buffalo already have been cleaned up, the DEC said.
