Muguruza drops Kerber
Rising star Garbine Muguruza improved to 2-0 in round-robin play with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Angelique Kerber at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Wednesday.
Kerber dropped to 1-1 in the White group with the loss, evening her with Petra Kvitova, who scored a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 victory over Lucie Safarova (0-2).
Muguruza entered her first WTA Finals as the No. 2 seed, and engaged in another tight battle with the sixth-seeded Kerber, whom the Spaniard beat at the French Open, Wimbledon, both majors, and Wuhan.
“I’m really motivated to be here because it’s my first time in Singapore singles,” Murguruza told reporters after the match. “So I really want to come here and win all the matches I can and hopefully go far.”
She is likely headed to the semifinals with a final round robin match against Kvitova on Friday. No. 4 seed Kvitova kept her hopes of advancing alive with a tough victory over the eighth-seeded Safarova after dropping her opening match to Kerber.
Safarova, who has been recovering from mononucleosis, built a 3-0 lead in the second set only to see her fellow Czech and Fed Cup partner storm back.
Safarova technically stayed alive in contention to move on from round-robin play with Muguruza’s victory in the day’s second match.
The Red group finishes its round-robin play Thursday in Singapore, with Maria Sharapova (2-0) facing Flavia Pennetta (1-1) and Simona Halep (1-1) facing Agnieszka Radwanska (0-2).
