Wind turbine approved for Lockport dairy farm

LOCKPORT – A 140-foot, 10-kilowatt wind turbine was approved Tuesday for an organic dairy farm on Slayton Settlement Road in the Town of Lockport.

The town Zoning Board of Appeals approved a variance for the project on the 197-acre farm owned by Karl B. Kowalski.

Thomas E. Fleckenstein of Niagara Wind & Solar, which intends to install the turbine next spring, said Kowalski is applying for grants from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help with the project, which will provide power for the farm, but not enough to completely power the operation.

The turbine will be erected about 400 feet from the road, Fleckenstein said, and will be surrounded with electric fencing to keep Kowalski’s cows from chewing on the cables. The noise level of the turbine will be about 50 decibels at the base of the steel tripod, he added.
