Miguel Rodriguez’s Power 10 for Oct. 28

1. Canisius boys volleyball. Another weekend, another tournament title.

2. Grand Island soccer. I guess this qualifies as make-or-break week for both GI teams. Girls play Amherst in semifinals Wednesday. Boys play Hamburg for Class A-1 title and Power 10 bragging rights Thursday.

3. St. Mary’s girls volleyball. St. Mary’s performance at marquee out-of-town tournaments and against Eden gives it a slight edge over Clarence and Williamsville East. Postseason results will decide who finishes ranked higher.

4. Orchard Park football. I am going to dispense Yoda-like advice so heed these words: Do not underestimate the big-play ability of the Wolverines.

5. East Aurora cross country. OK, so I unwittingly fell for the Blue Devils’ JV teams running in the Knox Invite against varsity teams and not winning and penalized the varsity teams for it, again. Sorry. I’ll never doubt either varsity squads’ abilities again.

6. Canisius football. Timon may have been missing its quarterback but Canisius did what it had to do to bounce back and get rid of nasty taste left in its mouth from loss to Aquinas.

7. Williamsville East girls volleyball and soccer. Both defended their ECIC division titles. Now both are trying to defend their Section VI titles. In regards to volleyball, Flames earns second straight nonleague win over Clarence.

8. Clarence girls soccer and volleyball. See above.

9. Hamburg boys soccer. It’s kind of fitting, and cool, that the Bulldogs, who first got into the Power 10 because of their ability to beat teams ranked ahead of them in various polls, once again find themselves in the underdog role heading into the sectional final against the state’s top-ranked team.

10. Lackawanna girls soccer. It’s a week late, but the Steelers earn this spot via ending that epic winless streak.

High honorable mention: Westfield/Brocton football, Orchard Park golf, Clarence girls swimming, Orchard Park girls swimming, Iroquois football.

Honorable mention: Lancaster boys soccer, Clarence boys soccer, Sacred Heart girls golf, South Park football, Cheektowaga football.
