McDONNELL, Bernard Patrick

McDONNELL - Bernard Patrick Died peacefully on October 9, 2015. He was the last surviving of eight children, Joseph (Mary), Helen (John Bucheit), Catherine (William Kane), James (Rose), John (Betty), Eugene (Mary), Ann (Ed Giblin), born to Liz and Barney McDonnell in Lackawanna, N.Y. Bernie graduated in engineering from Penn State before serving in WWII. As an officer with the 20th Engineers, he participated in the North Africa, Sicily and Normandy invasions. He led bridge building troops that paved the way for victories in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. His unit earned a Presidential Distinguished Unit Award for their perseverance at Normandy Beach. After returning to the U.S. he married Lillian Kilcoyne, who with her family added much grace to his life. Bernie continued his engineering career first with Westinghouse and later with Corning Glass. Bernie and Lil moved to Sun City, AZ after retirement. They then moved to Oregon in 1997 to be closer to their daughters. Lil passed away in 2004. Bernie lived his final years in the loving care of daughters, Kathy (T.K. Adams) and Mary. Bernie loved his grandchildren Jenny Adams-Valdez (Luis Valdez), Quoc Chau (Van Ngo), Nate Dang (Chrissy) and great grandchildren Samuel, Willow, River, Sydney and Gabriel. In lieu of flowers, some of Bernie's favorite charities are suggested, Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia Retirement Fund, Franciscan Friars of California Retirement Fund, Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Fr.
