The dean of the University at Buffalo’s largest academic unit, the College of Arts and Sciences, will step down at the end of the 2015-16 academic year.
E. Bruce Pitman, dean of the college since 2011, will return to being a full-time faculty member in the Department of Mathematics, where he is a full professor.
In a letter Friday to the university community, Provost Charles F. Zukoski credited Pitman’s leadership in the establishment of several initiatives, including the Center for Excellence in Writing, which supports writers at all levels across the university, and the creation of the Department of Materials Design and Innovation, a collaboration with the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences that addresses the national demand for new materials in advanced manufacturing, energy and biotechnology.
Pitman joined the UB faculty in 1989 and served as vice provost for educational technology from 2000 to 2003 and then as associate dean for research and sponsored programs from 2003 to 2011.
Zukoski said he will start a national search early in 2016 for Pitman’s successor.
