Jazz Funk Soul is a smooth-jazz supergroup of the first order. Between its members – keyboardist Jeff Lorber, saxophonist Everett Harp and guitarist Chuck Loeb – you could feasibly craft a family tree for easy-listening fusion, the branches of which would have to include everyone from Dave Koz and Kenny G to Lalah Hathaway and Miles Davis. That’s an awful lot of stylistic ground to cover, but Jazz Funk Soul, as its name implies, exists precisely because its members have little respect for strict genre classification, and have long believed that smooth R&B grooves, pop-leaning melodies and jazz-informed improvisation belong together in the same stylistic centrifuge.
Jazz Funk Soul will perform at 8 p.m. Friday in the Rockwell Hall Performing Arts Center, SUNY Buffalo State. Tickets are $32 to $45 (box office, Buffalostatepac.org).
