Inez Jeter, 98, started floral club in church in 1961

Feb. 14, 1917 – Sept. 25, 2015

Inez Jeter, who was long active in her Buffalo church, died Friday in her Williamsville home. She was 98.

Born Inez Gist in Union, S.C., she moved to Buffalo in 1942 with her husband and children.

Since 1943, Mrs. Jeter had been a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where she sang in the gospel choir and served on the kitchen committee.

Because of her love of flowers, she started the church’s Floral Club in 1961. The committee was responsible for adorning the altar on a weekly basis and decorating the church, especially for holidays and special occasions. Mrs. Jeter served as its president.

Her husband of 64 years, Flemon, whom she affectionately called “Jet,” died in 1997.

She is survived by two daughters, Mildred Richards and Ruth Baker.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Delaware Avenue Baptist Church, 965 Delaware Ave.
