LOCKPORT — Two Lockport police officers are credited with saving a man who apparently attempted suicide Sunday night by jumping into the Erie Canal, authorities said.
Police received a report of a man in the canal near Saxton Street about 7:30 p.m. Officer Michael Stover and Lieutenant Toby Trowbridge jumped into the water and swam to the man to rescue him, police said.
Both officers were able to reach the man, and they held on to the side of the canal while Lockport firefighters responded and provided a life vest to the man, police said.
The man and officers were pulled from the water about 8:15 p.m. by the Police Department’s Marine Unit. The man was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
