Edwin Soto, a 5-foot-8, 218- pound senior running back from Liberty, and the Morrisville State (2-1, 1-0) attack was too much for SUNY Buffalo State to handle Saturday in a 37-23 road loss in the winners’ inaugural Empire 8 Conference game before 2,313 in Morrisville.
Soto ran for 138 yards on nine carries, two of them scoring runs of 60 and 66 yards in the fourth quarter, another on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. Mustangs quarterback Cory Benedetto passed for 285 yards including a 70-yard bomb to Cristian Pena to open the scoring in the first quarter. The Bengals trailed all the way after that.
In Orchard Park, Hudson Valley Community College (2-2) built a 21-9 halftime lead and went on to a 31-21 victory over Erie CC (1-2).
Chris Davis scored all three ECC touchdowns, on an 80-yard pass from Sam Castranova (Williamsville South) to make it 14-6. He also ran 3 yards for a score and caught a 12-yard pass for another.
Buffalo State (1-2, 0-2 Empire 8) had seven fumbles, losing two but offset that with two long interception returns including a 50-yard pick-six by Will Cheshire to bring the Bengals to within 7-6 in the second quarter. The Bengals were outgained, 562-255, and held to a season-low 43 rushing. Tre Jones netted 48 yards on 16 carries and scored twice.
Aaron Ertel (Depew) replaced starter Dan Serignese at quarterback for Buffalo State in the second quarter, completing 16 of 30 passes for 199 yards, 73 to wide receiver Dale Stewart (Niagara Falls), who caught five.
Cheshire led the defense with 11 tackles and had a blocked kick.
