An unlicensed teenage driver from Orchard Park is accused of stealing and crashing a vehicle, then trying to ditch illegal drugs as police investigated.
Someone reported a vehicle off the road and into some trees along Forest Drive at about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived, the 17-year-old driver told them his car had broken down and he was waiting for a friend, according to police.
The driver didn’t have a license, police said, and officers noticed that he was extremely nervous and wasn’t following their instructions.
While officers were on the scene, the youth discarded illegal pills onto the ground and tried to crush them with his feet, according to police. After the driver was taken into custody, police learned that he had just stolen the vehicle.
More pills were found in the youth’s wallet, police said.
The driver, whose name wasn’t released by police, was charged with felony counts of grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and tampering with physical evidence, and misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
He also was charged with possession of a controlled substance not in its original container, unlicensed operation and failure to maintain lane. Police said the youth was held for arraignment in town and village courts.
