An ambulance crew member for a Genesee County volunteer fire department died early Wednesday when the ambulance hit the back of a construction vehicle while en route to a call, according to a spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
It’s believed sun glare was a factor in the accident, which happened at about 7:15 a.m. on Bovee Road in the Town of Riga.
The Bergen Volunteer Fire Department ambulance, with a crew of three, was heading east when it hit the back of an eastbound backhoe, according to Corporal John Helfer, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
The crew member who died was riding in the front passenger seat; he was pronounced dead at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. The male driver and female crew member in the back seat were taken to the medical center for examinations.
“They did not have a patient, as they were responding to a call,” Helfer said.
