After long layoff, Kane ready to get on ice with Sabres

Evander Kane has been part of the Sabres’ organization since February. The fans finally get to see him wear a uniform Wednesday night.

Kane will be in the lineup when Buffalo hosts Ottawa in its preseason home opener in First Niagara Center (7 p.m., WGR-AM 550). Kane will open as the top-line left winger alongside center Ryan O’Reilly and right wing Tyler Ennis.

“It’s definitely obviously been a long time for myself, but it is preseason,” Kane said after the morning skate. “It is going to be a game for me to get used to playing NHL hockey again. At the same time, I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans of Buffalo.”

Kane hasn’t played since shoulder surgery ended his season with Winnipeg. He was traded to the Sabres shortly after the procedure. He has no worries about testing the shoulder with a hit.

“I feel good,” Kane said. “I never play worried about if I’m going to get hurt or not. Usually if you start doing that, then you do get hurt. For me, I’m not worried about the first hit. I’m looking forward to it and looking forward to hopefully producing out there and having a good game.”

The Sabres’ other lines:

Jamie McGinn-Sam Reinhart-Brian Gionta
Evan Rodrigues-David Legwand-Jason Akeson
Jerry D’Amigo-Eric Cornel-Nicholas Baptiste.

Defense: Josh Gorges, Chad Ruhwedel, Carlo Colaiacovo, Jerome Leduc, Matt Donovan.

Goalies: Robin Lehner, Andrey Makarov.

Players listed as possibilities for the Senators include Chris Neil, Curtis Lazar and Mika Zibanejad.
