CANO, Valentine Raymond "Ray"

Cano - Valentine Raymond "Ray" Of Jacksonville, FL, passed away after a short battle with cancer on September 20, 2015. Born July 8, 1930 in Lackawanna NY, he was the son of Valentin and Mary Ellen (Murphy) Cano. Known to friends and family as "Ray" or "Papa Ray". He graduated from Lackawanna High School in 1948. Ray joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1960. After discharge from the service he worked various jobs including Bethlehem Steel, General Mills, and was a small business owner in Val-Ann Boarding Kennels as well as raising Registered Doberman Pinschers in East Aurora, NY. In 1973 he took a leap of faith and applied to the United States Border Patrol. As the oldest Cadet to complete the academy at the time, Ray was assigned to the Harlingen Texas Station where he worked for four years. He was transferred to the Border Patrol Station in Jacksonville, FL in 1978, where he worked until his retirement in 1995. Throughout the years, Ray loved to do yardwork, care for his dogs, and restored a Ford Model A; he was a member of The Antique Auto Club of America. In his later years he even became a Jacksonville Jaguar fan. Ray will be fondly remembered as having a strong voice and a firm handshake but was a kind and caring person with a bright smile, and an honest disposition. Most importantly, Ray was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. Ray will be sadly missed by those who were blessed to have known him. Ray is survived by his sister Mary (Cano) Miller of Lackawanna, NY; three daughters, Valerie Rae Cano (David) Arizmendi of Harlingen, TX, Tamara Marie Cano of Jacksonville, FL, and Chevonne Tina Cano of Lackawanna, NY. Ray is also survived by his granddaughter, Colleen Vanessa Arizmendi Kaplan and a grandson, Shelby Raymond Arizmendi and one great-grandson, Heath Logan Kaplan, all of Harlingen, TX. Friends, and others whose lives Ray touched, are invited to graveside services to be held at 2:30 PM on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218. PEEPLES FAMILY FUNERAL HOME is serving the Cano Family.
