Free inspections of child car seats will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Eastern Hills Mall, 4545 Transit Road, in Clarence.
Certified car seat safety specialists from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office will examine car seats, and offer advice and instruction on their proper use, installation and age/size appropriateness. Information on car seat recalls also will be available.
Inspections will be conducted in the front parking lot at the mall, under the marquee.
New York State requires that children younger than 8 be in a federally-approved child safety seat while riding in a vehicle. Children younger than 16 must wear a seatbelt, regardless of where they’re riding in a vehicle.
Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs is hosting the event in observance of National Child Passenger Safety Week. “Safety studies have shown that an estimated 30 percent of children continue to ride unrestrained and 80 percent of all car seats are used incorrectly,” he said.
